| Walter |
Hello Mr Yeng nice to see you here. |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
Hello All. Do we have a question? |
| fredg |
hello |
| fredg |
on your method of treating the eggs with Methlyne Blue... have you
changed it since the first edition of your book? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
no, no reason for changing because it works we have not changed
our system for breeding |
| fredg |
If I may a second one in a row |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
yes, please |
| fredg |
With your work with RSG, would you say that they will lead to the
"next" step in domestic "strains" or "types" of discus? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
I think we are working toward a stain - the wild RSG has small,
non-perfect spots with short striations while we are working... to
develop a strain with good striations and between the straitions,
spots |
| Karsten |
Shaifullah, I talked to Horst today about the new german Version
of your book, when is it to be expected ? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
Karsten - we have scheduled it to be released early November |
| Karsten |

| Dougall |
I was wondering if in your experience the average discus breeder
should be concerned with the transmittance of disease through the use
of live food in general - if yes - is there a favourite live food that
you use for rearing young discus? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
very good question Dougall let me answer yes, they should be
concerned...the use of live food can bring along with it flaglettis,
flukes...it depends on the situation of the fish - if small fishes, be
careful with use of artemia as it brings in odinium... to avoid this I
normally use beefheart mix, shrimps with fish fillets, shrimps, very
finely grated I think best food (although I do not use it) is live
earthworms even frozen bloodworms have bacterias and parasites that
have not been eradicated in the process of being frozen |
| Dougall |
thank you very much I too like frozen or freshly mixed feeds I
completely agree |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
what do you use for your prepared foods dougall? |
| Dougall |
I use beefheart and cod fillets with spirulina and lechithin with
a touch of garlic - it was a food mix suggested by Fred |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
I like the garlic, yes - it smells bad but is good for the fish
hahaha |
| Dougall |
yes indeed :-) Brenda (my wife) wont let me anywhere near the
kitchen when I have to make a mix up - she makes me go outside in the
cold :-( |
| Shaifullah-Yeng } |
hahaha@Dougall/Brenda |
| Dougall |
on occasion I have used lamb hearts but these take a great deal of
preperation :-( |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
we don't use lamb hearts |
| Glenn |
What are your favorite strains of discus? In your opinion, what
are the best selling strains of discus? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
my favorite strain is the brown discus...forget the word "strain"
haha best selling I think is spotted discus - spots enhance the
texture of the fish rather than just having the striations...I don't
like the white discus it's very weak and for no reason just dies - I
only can guess they are very weak genetically because they
are....mutation from the ghost (which is also a mutation) |
| Dougall |
What is the largest discus you have personally seen? (from lip to
caudal fin)? and was it one for yours or a friends? and if you could
only give 3 pieces of advice into the secret of growing super large
discus with good shape what would that be? thank you. |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
largest discus tip to tip about 17 cm...mine and I've seen it also
from other breeders although it is not common 1)contanst temp,
constant ph and 3) a variety of foods regular feedings TLC fishes that
are too large do not spawn well large or thick |
| Dougall |
thank you very much - I did not know that about large fish not
spawning well |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
yes, our favorite sizes for spawning is about 14cm to 15-16 cm
most Asian fish are about this size |
| Dougall |
You are very kind for sharing your time but I must let others chat
with you too - yes it is a size I would expect to see at the GOOD
breeders |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
what is the largest fish you have had and how did you get him to
that size? |
| Dougall |
the largest would be about 15cm and regular feedings, regular
water changes and lots of patience |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
ok, see you soon dougall |
| Dougall |
people said after a year he would not get bigger (he was 10cm
then) - but I didnt tell him that as I didnt want to hurt his feelings
- and then a year later he reached 15cm |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
hahaha |
| Andrew |
Is there a particular age you believe the male and female could
give you the "strongest " spawn? Good genetics.. |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
no |
| Karsten |
Mr. Yeng, "Constant Temp, PH & TLC for growing out Large Fish"
would you recommend any specific PH & Temp? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
yes pH best is 6.8 temp about 28Cif you have higher in planted
tank, the plants do not do well is your tank bare bottom or
planted/decorated? |
| Glenn |
Are you going to write another discus book? IMO, Penang Discus is
probably the best written so far. |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
thank you Glenn - I think not hahaha I actually have one in the
works coming out in November |
| Karsten |
Do you recommend a specific conductivity in ppm for hatching eggs? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
conductivity 60-80ms is best and conductivity assuming you do no
water changes (which is not recommended) if you are doing water
changes, this will shift the water quality and may affect the hatching
of the eggs or even eggs just die off...will change the osmotic
pressure and cause them to die so keep between 60-80ms, siphon bottom
but add no water (unless water is exactly same) for raising discus, it
is better to have slightly hard water, say 400ms this is for 1.5
inches up |
| Karsten |
Mr. Yeng, 60-80ms for hatching eggs along without changing the
water chemistry the first 2 days during hatching is an excellent tip
for all of us. Also maintaining a hardness of 250- 300us, constant PH
& Temp during grow out is a tip I will always remember |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
fry should be raised to 1.5 inches in breeding water sizes specify
nose to end of tail (total length - TL) |
| Walter |
Mr. Yeng I have a breeding pair which I have recently got from a
friend, the pair have not spawned in 3 years, they are happy and
displaying to each other but will not spawn. Do you have any tips to
help me to induce them to spawn ? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
are you sure it is a pair? |
| Walter |
yes |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
ok, what strain is it? |
| Walter |
brilliant turquoise |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
these should begin to spawn within 18 months unless that pair is
stunted, hormone treated early on when small, ms 60-80...\par what
foods are you using? should give them some live foods like fresh
oysters mixed into prepared foods |
| Walter |
well the pair were bought as a breeding pair but the friend I got
them from did not keep them in optimum water therefore they did not
spawn. I make my own beefheart mix I also feed them white worms and
tetra bits |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
maybe 5gms (oysters) to 100gms (prepared food) - be careful it
will pollute water so bind together well |
| Karsten |
Mr Yeng, would you recommend a binder in your oyster & food
preperation |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
[Karsten] we use CMC (carboxylmethylcellulose) to bind the
food...just mix a little in the food and it sticks |
| Andrew |
I have heard the use of marine salt to change the conductivety,
would that help Walter to trigger his pair? |
| Dougall |
my appologies for interupting, if walter were to use the salt, to
what should he raise his ms to? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
using rock salt, table salt, or what? |
| Andrew |
Marine salt as used in salt water tanks... interesting you mention
the use of oyters... they are raised in salt water... |
| Walter |
no Salt |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
[Dougall] need to know what kind of salt before I can answer |
| Dougall |
sorry rock salt would be my favourite |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
sodium chloride is not good I would say do not use it when eggs
are present |
| Dougall |
ok I understand - how would you use the salt to trigger spawning
or did I misunderstand? |
| Andrew |
With the use of Marine salt (ocean) to make a minor fluctuation in
the conductivity of the water to trigger the spawn... |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
no, didn't say that, triggering spawning for turqs is the oyster
in prepared food |
| Dougall |
thanks - my error |
| John_Hernandez |
Is feeding bloodworm "Frozen" a good source of nutitrition for my
fish? |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
no john because too many problems HIH, flagellites, flukes - many
parasites are brought in with these foods |
| Andrew |
thank you |
| Shaifullah-Yeng |
ok, must go now - it is after 2:00 - thank you for your questions |
| Andrew |
thank you |
| John_Hernandez |
Thank you Yeng |
| fredg |
Mr. Yeng, thank you for your time |
| Walter |
Thank You |
| Dougall |
thank you & enjoy the show and the good people there |
| Glenn |
Time to change water. Cya! |
